Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) – A Love/Hate Relationship, New Original Recipe Chicken Bites

Over the years, a many good years since I was a kid, I grew up on Kentucky Fried Chicken, known now only by KFC, there was usually a bucket of chicken in our future once every week or so, with the classic sides involved including mashed potatoes and gravy and corn on the cob.

Here enters KFC’s  new Original Recipe Chicken Bites.  I saw commercials for them on TV, and shared with my wife how I would like to try them sometime soon, well that sometime soon happened this past Sunday.  In the Parade section of our city newspaper The Plain Dealer was popping out a coupon for buy one Chicken Bites meal get one free, bingo! the perfect opportunity.

So Michelle ran out, it is only a few minutes away and picked it up, well I was sure that the six bites, and one side (I got mashed potatoes) would not be enough, so I asked her to grab me a small popcorn chicken as well.  She came back with everything and some bad news, she told me they don’t have popcorn chicken anymore, and I was taken back by this, and will share more on that.

What I can say, is that the bites are good, they are tasty, because for me they are done in the original recipe breading, not the crunchy kind you find in their chicken strips.  They have the right amount of flavor, and gave me memories of a product that went away about a year ago-The Original Recipe Chicken Strip, oh how I miss these!  So when these came out I was filled with joy of that classic taste, and they delivered.  The problem?  There is not enough in that six piece order to fill the average person’s hunger in my opinion.

So will there be other sizes, other than the 6 piece, I hope so, because as good as they are, there was just not enough.

Pros:

•  Original Recipe Breading
• All White Meat Chicken
• Drink and Side included for $3.99

Cons:

• Not enough bites for $3.99 price point
• Couple of pieces only slightly larger than popcorn chicken piece 

So this got me thinking about how many changes over the years, that KFC has made, that made me at one point question why I would eat there again.  My first trip down memory lane is the Chicken Little, that wonderful little breaded chicken patty square on the size of a bun that matches the size of a White Castle Burger.  Those little sandwiches (only 39-49 cents) back then were one of the best things growing up since the happy meal  I truly loved those, and miss them dearly, wish they would do a nostalgic trip down memory lane and find a way to bring them back!

I also mentioned earlier how they came out with original recipe chicken strips, I was so stoked for these when they came out, and they were some of the best things our there taste wise that could satisfy a good fast food meal.  They went away, I was sad.  I only got to enjoy those for a few months.

Then the last round here, was popcorn chicken, I was like yes, another decent item to satisfy my taste for chicken without needing all the bones!  I liked popcorn chicken, for a couple of reasons, the breading was really good, you sometimes got some nugget size bites, and they were good cold!  So if I didn’t eat them all, I could put them in the refrigerator and eat them cold out of the box without warming them up!  But alas, now that the chicken bites are here, they have gone away too.

I am happy that the chicken bites are here, they have the flavor, texture, and kick that I am looking for, there needs to be more of them, or offer them in bigger sizes packs at prorated prices.  So there I sat that day when I first tried them, still hungry.  I am thankful Michelle thought to buy me a couple of biscuits (and they are good) to finish off my appetite.  So my message to everyone is, go BUY them, so hopefully they stay around long enough for me to enjoy for awhile, till they change their minds.
