One thing I have learned over the years of being a Paramedic has been sometimes you choose your profession, and sometimes it chooses you. Often times when we decide what we are going to do in life, it is somewhat based on things we enjoy doing, and in most cases most of us get to do that and live out a life filled with mostly joy for a job well done. Then there is the other side of it where sometimes we are put into circumstances of a profession choosing you because maybe there was nothing open in your preferred choice, or just the demand came that you had to change your original goals for ones that met a need that you were trying to fill.
I have to say I have had the fortunate luxury of a little of both worlds. Ever since I was 8 or 9 years old, I knew I wanted to be a Paramedic. The thing of it was I excelled in computers, math, and business, but out of high school turned down scholarships to schools for those subjects, because fundamentally I had the vision or thought that I would rather make less money as a Paramedic and be happy, than more money sitting at a desk and be miserable. So I went into the Army, found myself, and received enough money from the G.I. Bill to go to Paramedic school and achieve my dream.
Did I make the right choice? I can honestly say if I had it all over to do again, I would say yes. While I am currently not working as a Paramedic anywhere, in my heart I am still one. I miss it, but after 20+ years of emergency and critical medicine I had to hang up my boots. So here I am with A Medic’s World, my attempt to reach the masses, and focus on one of my ultimate loves of writing and reaching out. I mentioned about the profession choosing you, I believe this happened as well, it chose me to fulfill my need to help people, to sincerely care about those in need, and to risk what would be my life if need be to accomplish that. I gave everything I had into being an EMT and Paramedic, I tried to show others the moral way to handle things, and succeed in demonstrating that people do care.
In October of 1998, I had a 4000 pound van fall on me during a rescue, took me about a year of physical therapy and pain management, and all against the odds of doctors telling me I would not be able to return to full duty. I proved them all wrong, was not ready to go on disability quite yet, was only 29 at the time, and I had so much left to do. I came back to work on my squad a year later, but with a pain in my back of about a 6 out of 10 everyday. Why? I don’t know, other than I just felt I had more to do. Well up till about a year ago, I kept working, mostly in emergency rooms and occupational medicine, but I kept going. Even though I was working through all the pain all those years, I kept going, but last year my body said enough, and it broke down pretty bad, that was a hard day, because I walked into my supervisors office, sat in the chair, and said we need to talk. I think she knew, that I was done, and I was. I still keep my license, I am hoping maybe one day of getting my certification back to teach CPR/First Aid, and even maybe help teach some EMT courses.
So did you choose the right profession? did the profession choose you? Would love to know your thoughts. Have a great day everyone, remember to smile it might make someone’s day! Tom.

Amazing story. It reminds me of my dad. He was a paramedic/emt till he was 32 when he joined the Navy. In the Navy he went on to be a IDC (independent duty coroman). I grew up around this field my whole life. Like you I love to write as well. It is passion. I like reading your reviews on resturants to since I live in Parma. :).
Tom Shewbridge says
Awesome. I will be doing more reviews as we go along. Thank you so much for your comments, and have a fantastic day!

What an incredible story! I grew up wanting to go into the Marines because I came from a military family. When I got pregnant at 18, I knew that I didn’t want the nomadic life for my daughter, so I decided not to join. I never did find my second calling after that. Well, I guess I did now that I became a blogger! Writing and socializing is so natural for me, I wish I had been doing this all along!
Tom Shewbridge says
Thank you for your comments, and writing was my second passion, and now my focus!

I think that I went into my first profession to please my family… 🙂 I’m 43 now and want to start over… I’m planning on heading to school to study acupuncture…a total departure from what I have been doing, but I couldn’t be more excited or pleased at the direction I am headed now!

I had always wanted to work in a Maternity Ward caring for the newborns, I have a great maternal instinct and practically every baby I come in contact with, I am able to calm them and put them to sleep in my arms. However, the profession chose me and I ended up working as an Admin. Asst. in a Toy Company – but this job enabled me to care for my three children as a single parent from birth till the youngest one turned 18 years old (I was then laid off after 21 years of employment).

My profession chose me when I was working, kinda fell in my lap. But my disability right now has put everything on hold.
Sandra Zumbrun says
The profession choose me at first because although I graduated with honors from high school my mother could not afford to send me to college; so, I entered an apprentice program where I was trained on the job while being paid and going to school. As my thirty-eight year career progressed, I choose the career steps to take and further my career goals until I retired.

I work in customer service and I guess you could say my profession chose me. I like working with and helping people and somehow ended up working in this field, even though it wasn’t originally what I planned on doing. I love it nonetheless!
Rachael B says
I think my profession more or less chose me. I was good at something and from there someone referred me to another position, and then I worked with a great girl who’s mom was looking for someone and on and on it seems to have gone. I’m only an administrative assistant, but I went from working at a floral shop to being the assistant to a CEO. It’s been a fun ride so far and I really do enjoy what I do.
Michelle Hagewood says
I would say that my kids chose my profession. I knew once I had children that I didn’t want them going to daycare and someone else seeing them grow up and me be at work and happen to miss their first word or first step. I had always wanted to be a pediatric nurse but once my oldest came along I knew that dream was gone because I was not going to sacrifice my family for my career. My happy medium happened upon me when I heard about medical transcription. It was a way to be in the medical field and work from home. I had a terrible time finding employment after college, a year and a half of looking. Then I finally got a job offer and suffered through the verbal abuse of a crazy boss for almost 2 years before I found another job doing general transcription. At first that job started out great, plenty of work and decent pay. Now it has fallen back to one or two jobs a week and sometimes none at all. Thankfully I think I’ve finally found the company that I will be independently contracted with for a very long time. I can choose which work I want (no more being stuck with whatever I’m given), I get to choose how much work I take each day (I can make however much I want since they ALWAYS have at least 50 jobs available each day), and I get paid weekly (no more twice monthly paychecks!). Although I don’t get paid as much as I was before I am able to choose the work I want whenever I want. If there is a day I don’t want to work it’s no big deal.

I used to dream of becoming an Accountant or any type of profession that focuses on office works and the like. Then when I entered college, I didn’t make it to my choice of course BUT a great opportunity opened up to me. Now I’m taking up my BS in Mechanical Engineering. I sure am enjoying what I do and what I learn everyday. Definitely God’s will. 🙂

Over the years I have worked in many fields ranging from medical lab to customer service to computer programming. They all had their ups and downs. I feel that any job/career can be great or not depending on a persons attitude and the attitude of co-workers.

Currently I am a Stay At Home Mom and I would have to say yes I absolutely chose right. I feel like time is short with our kids. I have 3 boys ages 20, 11,& 2 and one due any day now. With my first 2 I worked up until I had my 3rd child. I see the difference in being home and being here for them. I know everyone can’t stay at home and it does provide for tight finances, but for me leaving the corporate world has been the best professional choice that I have made.

I don’t rightly know the answer as I am a bouncer of sorts. I have never had a job I didn’t like as I believe you gotta love what you are doing in life in order to be stress free or at least less stressed. I have found that even though I say I don’t like people, I am a people person. I just mostly prefer to work alone but it does depend on the job. (Library, mowing lawns, waitress, cook, dispatcher, secretary & factory work).
I will say my favorite job was when I ran away with the Carnival when they came to town.
My next endeavor, I would like to be able to find something along the lines of helping the elderly. What I want to do is not really a job though as I just want to visit with them & do things for them that they may not be able to do anymore or if they have family that cannot do for them. Like grocery shopping or yard work or maybe just an ear to bend.
Tom Shewbridge says
Love the idea that you ran away with the Circus! That is awesome…thanks so much for your comment! Have a great day!

Laura Smith says
When I went to college we had one class (mandatory) to help decide what each person would be good at, mine always came up with something to do with math, so I have my degree in accounting and now 20 years experienced. But I am disabled due to all the computer work

In some ways I really wish that I had moved forword with my sports medicine degree…in others I very much know that I could never leave my son at daycare with someone else all day. So possibly after my kids are old enough that they are in school I will go back and finish that degree, until then I am so thankful that I get to be a stay at home mom.

Something I’m proud to say is I love my Profession as a sahm ! I wouldn’t want my life to be any other way. I know most people to not see being a sahm as a profession but to me it is. It’s my job to raise my kids the best I can and do all I can do for them. While I could get a job in my trained feild, I wouldn’t chose any other way to spend my day then with my kids !

I’m on disability and have been for about 15 years now. I can’t work outside the home so a couple of years ago I started writing. It just became profitable about 6 months ago, but I love it. I think writing actually found me. Several of my friends on Facebook told me about it and how to get started. Thanks for the great article. 🙂

My profession choose me. I was a bartender, just like my Grandpa. I grew up around the bar because of him, so it was a natural thing for me to do.
Diana Devlin says
My career/direction keeps changing the older I get. It seems that IT chooses me. Events and circumstances arise that lead me in a totally different direction. I’ve worked in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, then pursued an acting career, ran an online internet teddy bear business, worked in skincare retail and then freelanced as a skincare specialist. I’m currently unemployed but have been involved with animal rescue the last several years. And I’m active in the cancer awareness arena because I am a 2 time cancer survivor. I’ve worn lots of “hats” and hope to gain employment this year.
Tom Shewbridge says
Thank you for your comments, congratulations for conquering Cancer, and for all you do! Have a great day!

My profession chose me and it was something that I really wanted to do, that was be a stay at home mom. Looking back I am glad I made that choice because I am so close with my 3 boys now ages 29 25 and 19. I am glad that our family beat the odds, my boys having a hands on mom at home and a family that stayed together, (my husband and I just celebrated our 30th anniversay) Im not saying things werent tough at times but we maanged and my boys learned that they had to work for what they wanted instead of having things given to them. I wouldnt change a thing!

My profession chose me. For some reason I excel in customer service. I am a great listener, and that is the one most important thing that sets me apart from others. If I had my choice? I’d be a famous artist.
Caitlan Meador says
For me it’s a yes and a no. I chose graphic designer because I was working as one for my Dad while I was still in high school. I got to work in my field for years and made good money. I am not a SAHM in a small town and my degree won’t do me any good here, but it’s still a win for me because I am a freelance graphic designer and work from home part time for the local newspaper and am about to begin using my skills to start blogging. So all in all yes, for me I chose the right profession 🙂
Tom Shewbridge says
If you see this, I could sure use some graphic work for my site, if you are interested, please get a hold of me, I can’t afford a lot, but am interested in a custom banner for the site. Thank you so much for your comment.

I think my profession chose me. I was working as a waitress wanting to be close to my children, but then they grew up & went back to the office as a typist, but then I was in a law firm, and the more and more I helped people the better and better I got at it, and it sort of dragged me in to go further and further. I went back to school, and became a Legal Assistant, but then I guess when you boil it all down, eventually I chose the final battle. I retired and became a SAHM.
Athena S says
I guess you could say its a little bit of both for me . I chose to go to school for human service to work with children, knowing that profession wasnt going to make me wealthy but happy and content with knowing it was a profession I loved. Well after going to school for 4 years I met my bf and ended up getting a profession that chose me motherhood (might sound weird), but when I was little when adults said what u wanna b when u grow up I said a mommy not saying I didnt have high hopes for my future but for me being a mother and nurturing a child was always something I wanted to do one day so at 26 I had a beautiful and healthy baby girl and have been a stay at home mom taking care of her ever since.I love being a mom and couldnt imagine being anything else

I made the mistake of not choosing any profession. Went to college and got my BA, then got married and had children. Family wasn’t a mistake, but not having a profession was. I’m not working as a teacher’s assistant during the school year and considering going back to school in a couple years… as my kids are growing up. I’m just not making enough money.
Can’t imagine having a 4000 van fall on me and survive! That’s horrible and yet a miracle at the same time.

I honestly don’t think I did. I really wish I had gone into the health care field. I feel like I’m too old though, but they say you’re never to old.
Tom Shewbridge says
You are correct you are never too old. I knew a 42 year old woman who became a nurse, and ended up in the ICU as a nurse because she wanted to make a difference. I knew a 45 year old friend who became a Physician Assistant. It can happen, thanks for your comments, have a great day! Tom.

Dona Keyton says
I had the same happen to me. I was an LPN, and looked forward to eventually going to get my RN. I truly loved my job and felt that I had finally found my calling. When I became injured, I too felt that I had to keep trying. After two years I had to finally say, enough. One doesn’t wake up asking to be in pain every day. I can say that I loved my job, and felt so useless after I could not continue. I went through a real ruff patch and the depression became noticeable. I decided to go back to college and earn my associate degree, and work in Human Resources. Now, I am to old to get back into the work forces. Don’t wait to lone to do something, anything.

I didn’t get to choose the right profession. I had to get a job at an early age and did not get to follow my dream of what I had always wanted to do. I am now to medically ill to try and am now on disability and a mother of 2 teenagers.
Marsha Scott says
I chose my profession because I had been in and out of hospitals for most of my childhood. I chose to be a Registered Nurse but my body decided it didn’t want to cooperate and I had to retire because of medical reasons. If I had it all to do over again, I would go for a sedentary occupation to enable me to work for my adult life and retire when I chose and not when my body chose.
Richard A. says
I truly don’t know if I have chosen the right profession. I am studying Accounting currently in school and I believe it is what is right for me.
Janine says
I think I am in the “Profession” chose me boat. I graduated UCLA with a BA in Anthropology, but after working in a basic science lab for 5 years, knew I was not the “publish or perish” type, so did not pursue my PhD. 25 years later, I have expanded my knowledge to recruitment and retention in pharma clinical trials and NIH studies. I *love* my job and empathize with you on the subject of “working hurt” as I have done so since 12/21/12. I dislocated my left shoulder and need to have my torn labrum repaired, but can’t bring myself to let my boss know. It’s *such* a bad time with one study ending and another just starting and with the funding situation *so* bad, I don’t want to risk my job by being out 1-3 months…not to mention leaving my patients for that long!!! Thanks for letting me rant! 🙂
Tom Shewbridge says
You didn’t rant, thanks for your wonderful comments. I thought I would always love getting into research, was always the why can’t this work kind of mentality. Have a great day, hope you get your shoulder tended to, prolonged damage could be worse that having the pain now. But I understand where you are coming from. Have a great day, Tom.

When I did work, I was a secretary/administrative assistant and always enjoyed working in an office. I enjoyed every position I held. Now, I’m a stay-at-home mom and to my family this has been the most rewarding position. I’m grateful that our situation allows me to do this.

I hated my job…since I was 16, I worked in Human Services, and I was miserable, even though I was very good at it…My cousin asked me, a couple years ago, if I wanted to try for a job in the office where he works…I LOVE IT!!! I can’t believe I used to do what i hated…I would never look back now.

I chose my profession: by 11th grade I knew I wanted to be in corporate finance, and by the age of 35, with a BA and MBA, I was CFO for a software company. However, I also chose to end my career – thank goodness I was not pushed out or laid off when I decided to retire early.

Pamela Sims says
My profession chose me then it kicked me ito the curb. I was a machine operator in a manufacturing plant. I’ve been on long term disability now for 2 years with my knee and back because of the job. Lost my job after a year on medical leave because I couldn’t return. So here I am with no profession. Can only go up from here. I’m glad to be alive.
Tom Shewbridge says
It is always good to be alive. Everything else is just a blessing!
Jayme Hennessy says
I started out by “choosing” my profession as an accountant. Straight out of high school I secured a position doing accounting while going to college. I continued this career path for fifteen years. Then my first-born turned four and I wanted to school her at home instead of putting her into a preschool for VPK. That was the turning point for me. I am now a “full time teacher” to my three children in grades PK, 2nd, and 4th. I also teach a friend’s daughter who is in the 9th grade. I can honestly say that I was NEVER this happy in the accounting field. I am just so blessed to be able to stay home and “work” this “profession.”
Cheryl Rahkonen says
I have had many jobs but I have often asked myself what is my purpose and what should I be doing. I believe as a woman my number one job or profession was that of a mother and wife. I am a wife and a mother of 8 children and 14 grandchildren. Who chose who or what, I am not exactly sure – but I wouldn’t give it up or change a thing.

It was sort of both. I’ve always been a huge reader and loved being in a bookstore so when I found out they were hiring I took the job. I’ve worked for 2 different bookstores now and absolutely love it. Was it the profession I would have thought I’d be in no probably not but I cant say that Im not happy with it. 🙂

Tom Shewbridge says
I am sorry…maybe time will still allow it. Keep your head up.

All of my professions chose me! Even being a SAHM but I believe that God or My higher power gave me what I truly wanted in the end. My dream as a child was to be a singer, and I my singing voice I don’t think would have been “star” quality. I still get my kicks now singing my boys to sleep! Anyways this post is really insightful! I am glad that you followed your dream. I heard that the emergency profession can burn some people out. I think in the end as long as we follow our hearts and our guides we will end up where we are supposed to be 😉 I still have a dream of writing and being an artist, as I am working on both of those!
Shauna Smith says
That is kind of a hard question to answer.. I think my profession chose me. I really had no idea what I wanted to do and had a few odd jobs when young but ended up in an insurance office because i wanted to work in an office. I have enjoyed my job and helping people understand their insurance etc.. but I think it chose me as I had no clue what I wanted to do. Thanks for sharing your story. It really made me think..

I find this very interesting to think about. All my life I just wanted to be a Mom. Growing up in the time of women’s lib when we were being taught we could and should be more than just that I felt guilty about what I wanted. I went to college, changed my major from teaching to medical records, knowing all along it was something I only wanted to do 5-6 years tops.
I got my wish not to work about 3 years after I got married, only to go back to work to help get out of debt. I found I excelled in an office environment and was good at it.
I quit working to finally become a Mom, I stayed home until our child was in grade school and went back to work in fast food. It’s an okay job, I wasn’t looking for a career. I was a good employee, but ended up quitting for health reasons. Several years later I found myself working in a preschool setting. I loved it. I learned so much about myself and the little ones I taught and took care of. After 12 years I had to quit for health reasons (cancer). I was very upset that something I loved so much had been taken away from me, however with my type of cancer – leukemia – the very little ones I loved so much also kept me sick a lot since I had no resistance to their illnesses. Whatever they came down with would put me out sick for days.
Now I find myself in an interesting spot. I’ve recently completed treatment, I’m in remission. I’m beginning to wonder what’s next. I’m not ready to go back to work, but I am beginning to think of the possibilities. It will be interesting to find out what finds me.
Jennifer Driskell says
I totally agree with your post. My husband is a firefighter and didn’t find this true calling until he was in his 30s. He has always mowed his own yards but need to have insurance for his family. He couldn’t decide what he wanted to do and decided to go through fire standards. He definitely loves his job and the brotherhood it brings with it.

Joann Alvarado says
Well, this is a most interesting topic for me to have landed on. I am at the point in my life where I feel unsure of everything concerning careers, unfortunately. I have been a “full time mom” for most of my life. My son, who was fully disabled with Cerebral Palsy, passed away almost 3 years, 2 weeks before his 17th birthday. I never left him with sitters and when he went to school, I also worked in the school to keep an eye on him. He truly was my life. I woke up every night of his life to turn him (which is why he never had a bedsore) because I always wanted to care for him the way I hoped someone would care for me, should I be in that position. Anyway, after his passing,I have thought about what career path I should take, as I need to earn money. I enrolled in school, went into nursing and scored exceptionally well, but I still don’t feel this is the path for me. I’d rather work in a soup kitchen some where. lol The things I love and have a passion for always involve charity. I wonder if I have a need to feel needed or something? Anyway, It seems that the things I LOVE to do, don’t pay money. lol I apologize for rambling on, I’m still trying to figure things out and hoping either I find a career (or ob at this point) or one finds me…

I am sure I was meant to land on this particular post. For years I wanted to be a teacher but as they say; life happens. I became a very young wife and mother, dedicationg myself to being the best mother and wife I could be. I often dreamed of going back to school only to rationalize that any money for schooling HAD TO go to my kids. I worked in banking for 10+ years to help pay the bills of our growing family. I became a room mother, aide, and Girl Scout Leader. During that time I had pretty severe back pain and underwent my first spine surgery. I went off work until I recuperated and ended up going to work for a doctor. I gained enough experience that I became a medical biller for 7+ years. Once again my back was acting up and I had to quit. I endured my second spine surgery and started to get depressed. My doctor treated me for that and I began to feel stronger and wanting to work again. On a whim I answered an employment ad and it led me to the job of my dreams. I became the Communication Coordinator for the largest non-profit in our county. I tried hard to ingnore the back pain and even harder to hide it. I truly LOVED this job and felt that God had led me to this position. My kids were grown, we were comfortable, and I was loving my job, helping others and seeing the good work non-profits are doing to better our community. Then one morning as I was dressing, I was overcome by a STRONG jolt of pain in my back. Once again I had to quit. But this time I was DEVISTATED! I LOVED my job. Now I am once again and finally permanently on disability. I feel like such a loser. Most days to say I am sad is an understatement. My doctor has sent me to “pain Management” PT and various other procedures. I am like you, that I am about a six on a good day. Other days I am laid up. I am on narcotics every day that keep me from driving and that for me is the worst thing ever. To depend on others. My husband has to take time off to get me from doctor to doctor. This IS my life and I wish I knew it could get better… Your post really hit home for me and I guess in some small way it helps to know someone out there understands…
Tom Shewbridge says
Thank you for your comment, I am sorry you lost what you loved as well. I am not sure where my next step will be, but it will be made with enthusiasm though! Have a great day, thanks for sharing, Tom.

My profession chose me. I did not choose it. When I was a child I had to work after school helping an aunt who was disabled. When I had to pick a major in college to get away from my crazy dysfunctional alcoholic home I picked nursing out of the book as I knew I’d always find a job and would not have to rely on a man like my mother did. I never in my life considered being a nurse. I wanted to model, sing, dance etc. I worked as a nurse for 20 years and raised 4 kids. I did not want to be a nurse anymore so I left the field. I spend the last 20 years taking care of family members with major health problems. I read a book by psychic Sylvia Browne after my sister died @ 46 of cancer. Sylvia said we come into this world with 40 life themes. I realized mine is a healer. that is why I keep getting put in circumstances of helping those with major health problems even though I don’t want to. A mother and brother with mental illness, a sister with cancer, cancer myself, 3 out of 4 children with serious lung problems dad with cancer etc

I started going to college for Computers, but I also wanted to do something in the law field. But decided I would end up being a bankrupt defense attorney due to my morals and computers were too easy and got a bit boring. Right now I’m a sahm, and somewhat of a blogger and I love it. But, I’m considering going back to school to be a Veterinarian :). I love animals, and always wanted to be a Veterinarian but I didn’t have the heart to euthanize them. But, now that I’m 29 I’ve realized if I were to get licensed, I could decide to NOT euthanize unless it was for the right reason (deathly ill, badly injured with no chance of recovering etc.). Which will probably make me a slightly poorer Vet lol but at least I will be happy with what I do.
Devona Fryer says
I think the happiest people are the ones who allow their professions to choose them. I feel that when we choose a profession we might not be thinking with our heart. But when a profession chooses us, then the heart is screaming with joy!

I always thought my job chose me. I volunteered from the age of 12 at a local home for mentally challenged kids and at a nursing home for the elderly and did that until I was old enough to actually work at both. I started at both as a housekeeper, took the course to become a Certified Nurses Aid and worked at both as a CNA once certified.I think it is in my nature to care for those that cannot care for themselves. Even when I could no longer do the CNA work due to back issues, I stayed on as an Administrative Assistant at the Home for Children, eventually became the Regional Manager for the 17 houses they had.
Tom Shewbridge says
Thank you for caring for those who sometimes nobody else wants to care for. Or want to take time to, in some cases. Thanks so much for your comment, have a great day! Tom.

I think the profession chose me. I would love to have been an artist working in multiple medias but I needed money and time to be with my children so the best option was becoming a teacher so I’d have holidays & summers off with my children and be home from school when they got out.

Unfortunately my job and life went to other way. I was injured through lifting on the job at 30. Had to have my first surgery then on herniated disks. Then for some reason the rest of the disk’s started herniated right on down the line and now after just turning 50 have had 4 surgeries and a unknown amount of metal I am in pain and still can’t work. My job is learning how to live on a daily basis with pain. I stay on the internet a lot and it seems to take my mind off of it some. But unfortunately sometimes you can not choose your job, Fate chooses for you.
Amanda Greene-Lebeck says
My profession chose me I geuss I would say. I have always been into hospitals, nursing homes, and home health care. I started out getting my CENA License. I did the nursing home thing, it wasnt for me, did that for one year. Then I tried daycare, definitely wasnt for me lol. I then found home health care was where I belonged. Did that for one year, was promoted to team leader. Did that for a little over a year and became disabled. Now I’m also mourning the loss of my job, I miss it more than I thought I could;/

Wow, I applaud you and have to say I quite understand where you have been and where you want to be. I currently have one more class and one more semester of internship to reach my goal of a Master’s in Counseling. Last January 13th was my “end of the line” day. I had been working as an in home intensive mental health counselor for children and while I love my field the whole traveling all day sometimes 7 days a week had taken a toll on my already gimped up back, hips, knees and shoulders. That day I was having spasms so badly I leaned my car seat back and could not get up. Ending up in the ER and taking pain medications that altered my ability to drive, I could not chance driving like that and being without the medication was not something I could do anymore. My goals have changed over the last year, now I am 44, on disability…No medical insurance yet, but once July 2014 comes around and I can get started on the surgeries I need – Once I get through PT and recovery I am hoping to get back to working withfolks affected by Autism, PTSD and teaching PT at a local college.

Wow. I think it’s amazing that you’re a Paramedic. It’s amazing that you knew you wanted to be a Paramedic from a young age. It’s amazing that you were strong enough to recover when most people don’t have that will. I think professions definitely try to choose us and that a lot of people ignore it. My fiance is a physical therapist and has so much passion about the work. I’ve always known I was going to be an artist. I tried doing other things. I tried being a business woman and etc. but art kept drawing me back.
Tom Shewbridge says
I love art, of all times, awesome that you are an artist. And your fiance has a rewarding job as well, helping patients like me when I thought I was out of it forever. So I appreciate both of what you do. I like abstract art, collecting A4 sized art, art cards, sketch cards etc…

My chosen profession was a stay at home Mom. My children are now grown…I loved staying home with my children. There never seemed to be a dull moment. I learned to juggle schedules, was a nurse,a cook, the head accountant, and etc. No pay, little sleep, very little me time and no appreciation. I am a caregiver. I think I made the right choice since I take care if my mom full time. This wasnt a field that I 1st chose. But it is the one in am in now. Considering all the on going health issues my mom has had with liver transplant & a kidney transplant & her 13 month hospital stay. I can proudly say I am where I need to be at this moment. I respect the paramedics as I can’t count the numerous times I have had them come & get mom. And so I make sure I have a copied med list waiting for their arrival & I say a prayer for them all the time. As they have saved my moms life more then once. I have a few friends that are also paramedics & the stories I have heard from them & the long hours they work. I can’t imagine how hard it is for them. But I also know my friends love their jobs they never think of themselves as heros, even tho they have done some heroic things. They risk their lives daily to save others. That’s a hero to me.. 🙂

It is a miracle, that you are still living on this planet, and have such a strong will. I could never work in any profession where there are wounded people. When I was young I worked in resturants, and sold Avon which were professions that chose me. Then I chose to be a hairstylist and loved it. I had gone into grooming dogs for a while and then went back to being a hairstylist. I had injuries to my neck, shoulders, and back since I was 3 years old. I had to pay for chiropractors, in order to keep working (against doctors orders), and finally I just couldn’t work any longer. There are so many things I would love to do “if only”.

Over the past decade and a half, I have been in many industry. I don’t think I have just one profession, or if any one of my past profession should be considered a profession at all because I tend to move from one industry to another. Many people can find a career and say it’s their passion, but I find that I have too many passions to settle for just one. I like to experience many things in life, and never do I regret anything. I’ve been anything from an administrative assistant to the administrator… from an owner of a fashion boutique serving consumers, to a franchisee serving other businesses out there… and now, I’m enjoying my venture as a designer. Regardless of your profession, as long as you find that you are doing what your heart passions and remember that what you value in life comes first, then you can never go wrong.
