Four Things to Consider When Choosing Men’s Wedding Rings
Choosing a wedding band for the groom may be a somewhat daunting task, since many men have not been wearing rings or even noticing rings too much during their lives. Women may have dreamt of their wedding ring for years, or at least have a fondness for shopping and some experience seeing the wedding rings of their friends and family members. Men are likely less experienced, since guys don’t generally love shopping, or sit around showing off their wedding bands when they get together. So when it comes to choosing men’s wedding rings, it may be wise to have a few fundamentals in mind before you make the big decision.
Find a Ring that Fits Your Career and Lifestyle
SHANECO.com reports that many couples start looking at styles first because its the most obvious part of the decision, it’s important to stop a minute and think about what ring makes sense for your lifestyle. For example, if you work with your hands, you need to make sure your ring won’t get in the way, or be damaged by materials or harsh chemicals that you use while working. If you are a mechanic or work in a factory with machinery, you may be limited in what type of ring is safe to wear while you work. Depending on the career, there may even be rules about wearing rings while you use certain equipment. Check into this before you start shopping, because it will be a big help to you when narrowing down your choices.
Choose Comfort Over Design
If you find yourself caught between something really snazzy that is full of diamonds and special touches, but is not as comfortable to wear than another ring, you will most likely be happiest in the long run with the comfortable choice. One man found that his ring with the beveled, brushed gold edges was very attractive, but within a few weeks he realized that it constantly dug into his finger and even made little cut marks sometimes. Months after the wedding, he was so weary of the problem that he chose to have the beveled edges sanded off, thus reducing the amount of gold and the value of the ring. If he had realized the comfort problem before purchasing, he would have made a much different choice.
Will You Wear it Daily?
Both of the above tips may not be as big of a concern if you decide not to wear your wedding ring every day. Since there are certain careers where men cannot wear their rings at work, some men will decide consciously to wear their rings more for special occasions. In this case, finding something that is really unusual and fun, even if its not super practical for everyday use, may just work for your lifestyle. One man chose a very low cost, plain silver band to wear every day, and a nicer ring full of beautiful diamonds to wear when he went out for nicer occasions. The important part is to make a decision that makes sense for your lifestyle, and not worry so much about what others do. Word of caution: make sure your wife-to-be is happy with your decision about how often you wear your ring, because her opinion can make a big difference for your relationship moving forward.
Choose a Ring That Fits Your Personality
Lastly, the most important point is to make sure your ring fits your personality. No matter how comfortable or fancy your ring, if you don’t absolutely love it, keep looking. Some men just want the shopping experience over with, so they make a hasty decision, or they may just go with what their fiancee likes. Just remember that you will likely be wearing this ring for years, and hopefully for the rest of your life, so its important to think carefully about your decision. Spend some time shopping around for a variety of different men’s’ wedding rings until you find the best ring for your lifestyle, comfort and tastes.

My Dad never wore a wedding ring and it never seemed to bother my Mom. My husband, on the other hand was very excited to buy and wear his ring and we went together and bought matching gold rings that he wore proudly until his death. I now wear his ring around my neck and makes me feel closer to him.

Sometimes you just cannot find anything. This was the case for my husband and I, so he doesn’t even wear a ring. Maybe someday we’ll find the perfect one, but no biggie!

great post. my husband is a mechanic and the wedding bands we got are supposed to be the hardest metal ever…(I can remember what it is now… carbide??). unfortunately that means it CAN crack. Better the ring break than he lose a finger though.
