If you’re looking into a career in the medical field, there have never been so many choices available for education in an industry that continues to grow. Some people shy away from checking into health care careers because they’re squeamish or they feel that they may not be able to handle the stress and trauma of dealing with life and death situations. Careers in the medical field don’t always involve direct contact with patients or with traumatic situations. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes career choices that will still allow you to be a part of an expanding industry and help people to live better, healthier lives. Here are some potentially lucrative and very important behind-the-scenes medical careers.
1. Biomedical Equipment Technology
This career involves troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining essential life-saving equipment used by everyone from surgeons to EMTs. If you think about it, this occupation is almost as critical to saving lives as that of the people who use the equipment. If the equipment doesn’t work properly, people’s lives are put at risk. Biomedical equipment technologists also train medical and rescue personnel in the proper use of such equipment. If you’re technologically inclined, this may be a good option for you.
2. Bioinformatics
This discipline uses computers to analyze large amounts of biological data and find meaningful results that have implications in the fields of biological engineering and genetics. The goal of bioinformatics is to gain a deeper understanding of biological processes by mining pertinent data and analyzing it via pattern recognition, visualization and algorithms. Some examples of this are the studies of DNA gene sequencing and cellular evolution modeling.
3. Health Informatics
Health informatics is a field that studies medical technologies and how they can be used to address common problems and concerns with managing data and providing more efficient services to patients. With more medical facilities relying on technology for patient information and care management, this is another field that’s exploding with opportunities. Jobs in this field are available everywhere from hospitals and clinics to public health facilities and research labs.
UIC’s online clinical informatics degree is one example of the type of health-related degree programs that are available from online education providers. There’s more to the health care industry than just doctors and nurses. There are many research and support careers that are growing. All it takes is a little ingenuity to find something in the medical sector that’s rewarding and challenging.

At one time the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center offered a degree in Health Information. I was one of the first students enrolled in the new program back in the mid-70s. I’m not sure what happened, but they never quite got the full program off the ground. What a shame. Look where health information is nowadays.
I already had my BA degree in Journalism at the time with a minor in Telecommunications; and I had considerable experience working in the Public Information Office at Odessa College before my days at Texas Tech. That program was just what I was looking for…at the time.
