The movie Outbreak was on SyFy network yesterday, and I kept thinking to myself, even after 2o years, can you believe that? 2o years, how much of an impact this movie was, and has made on how we think about life.
In the beginning of the movie Outbreak was a quote by Joshua Lederberg, and it says “The single biggest threat to man’s continued dominance on this planet is the virus.” and if you truly think about that, it is totally true.
It seems that nature has always found a way to keep us in check. To ultimately show us that she is boss, and that no matter how great we think we are, that a single virus, can show us how weak we really are.
The movie has an all-star cast: Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Donald Sutherland, Patrick Dempsey and more. You have a film that shows the dangers of a virus that is controlled by the government that makes it’s appearance known again many years later. Now it has spread again, and mutated, causing even more havoc as they try and gain control of it. What I love about the movie is that it shows the arrogance of what too much power with something that deadly, can do to our world, if it had just been destroyed in the first place.
I love how the story, hunts for the cause, eventually finds it, and finds a cure. However, it seems to take awhile, with all the unnecessary dialogues, to come to that point. In the middle of all of this you have a 2-star general that just wants to destroy the town, because of something that could have been avoided from the very beginning. The movie has a wonderful amount of one-liners which adds a very needed comic effect to an otherwise very serious topic of a movie.
So have you seen the movie? What did you think of it? How much does it scare you?
