We are sharing this post as part of a Bloggin’ Mamas Social Good Campaign, and were not compensated for doing so.
Bloggin’ Mamas is sponsoring this giveaway in support of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, AdoptUSKids, and the Ad Council. November is National Adoption Month and they are encouraging prospective parents to adopt older youth from foster care.
The theme for National Adoption Month is, “We Never Outgrow the Need for Family.” That’s because older children and youth still have many big milestones in their life they need a family for.
There are 415,000 children in the U.S. foster care system and 108,000 are waiting to be adopted. AdoptUSKids’ maintains a national photo listing service for children waiting to be adopted. Since the project launched in 2002, more than 25,000 children who were once photo listed on adoptuskids.org have been adopted and nearly 38,000 families have registered to adopt through the website. Nevertheless, older youth are disproportionately represented – approximately 41 percent of children and youth photo listed on adoptuskids.org are between 15 and 18 years old, but only 17 percent of those adopted have been in this age group.
Older youth and teens have lower adoption rates than younger children, and they often wait longer to be adopted. But no matter their age, all kids need a supportive, loving home and the teenage years are a critical period for growth.
Visit adoptuskids.org or to call 1-888-200-4005(English) or 1-877-236-7831 (Spanish) to receive the latest information about the foster care system and the adoption process. You can also visit the campaign’s communities on Facebook and Twitter.

I learned that there’s more of an effort now to help place older teens up for adoption, which I truly appreciate. As a teacher I see so many older foster children totally give up on life because they do not feel like they belong anywhere, nor to anyone special, and there are often very sad consequences from this lack of love.
Robyn Donnelly says
I don’t have any experience in adoption but I was told that my dad isn’t my real dad because he adopted me at 1 month. My mom is my real mom so I wasn’t in an adoption center or home.

Personally, I have 2 friends that have adopted a child, it’s been a blessing to the families that chose to adopt and by providing a loving home gave their adopted child a bright future. God bless them all and all those who chose the same path.

My sister-in-law is adopted. Her mother would never give out her birth information. She finally learned the details when she was in her 50s.

It breaks my heart to learn that 25,000 young people are released from foster care without anyone to support them in life. My cousin was adopted and she brought great joy to my aunt and uncle.

I learned that they’re here to help you whether you’re just starting the process to foster or adopt, waiting for a placement, or looking for post-adoption resources. I’m not adopted but my husband is. He never met his birth parents sand doesn’t want to but he is super close to his adoptive parents.

“The new “FOCUS on Foster Families” app provides resources and information to foster caregivers and youth in care. Hundreds of video resources feature foster care alumni and parents sharing advice.”
I was adopted with my younger sister. I was 2 1/2 and she was 1 1/2. Our six other siblings were not put up for adoption and were placed in a state home until they reached major age. Being adopted was the best thing that could have happened for my sister and I. If I had had the opportunity when I was younger, I would have fostered and/or adopted. We need to adopt the children here in the USA.

I have a few friends that were adopted. I think it is such a beautiful choice. I know they all had better lives than the alternative, and I love them all so I am glad they were allowed to become part of a wanted family. I am so sad to read that there are more than 108, 000 kids ready to be adopted. I have often wondered if I should do adoption/foster care. I just pulled up some photos of kids in my area. I will have to look into this.
Barbara Lima says
No, I am not adopted. There is a great need for adopted older children, teenagers. The website features several teenagers that need adoption.
Gina Freire says
I learned that there are families out there that do adopt older children, such as my friend’s family. My friend was an only child so the adoption of an older girl was an exciting and loving moment for her and her family.

My dad was adopted when he was a little boy. He passed away without ever getting to meet his biological family. This year though all of his siblings and other family members all found each other and we had our first reunion – it was very special.
