I believe we all do what we can to protect ourselves, our family, our home, and will make the best conscious effort to ensure that we have the tools and knowledge to get that done. Are you prepared for detecting Carbon Monoxide properly in your home?
I was given an opportunity to review the First Alert CO710 Carbon Monoxide Alarm here in my home. This was one review I was not going to let pass me by, as I try to protect my wife, and this household as best I can on a daily basis.
Most of us know that there is a difference between CO Detectors and Smoke Detectors. Having both in your home is important. While a smoke detector will alert you to the presence of smoke or a fire, it will not detect Carbon Monoxide, and let you know if there is something causing those levels to rise in your home.
So having a device like this First Alert CO710 Alarm in your home will monitor levels and do it for up to a decade to come. That’s right, this carbon monoxide alarm has built-in lithium batteries that provide protection without having the need to replace them for up to 10 years.
The peak function captures and allows you to retrieve the highest CO level recorded in your home if there was ever an incident. In the event of a CO incident, this valuable information can be passed along to Paramedics, Firefighters, and Hospital Staff.
I tested the CO detector in the video below to make sure it was functioning properly. It is recommended that you do this weekly. You don’t want to have it miss something because of a malfunction or it was at the end of its battery life. The unit does have an end of life alarm that will alert you to when you will need to replace it.
The test passed with flying colors, and I placed this one in the back hallway, an addition we had done a few years ago. I hope to be able to grab a few more of these, and place in different parts of the house. I was a Paramedic for 24 years, and I have responded to a few Carbon Monoxide emergencies in the past. If you are not detecting for it, it can sneak upon you, mimicking signs of the flu, and then it might be too late.
As you can see, it sits nicely without tipping over on the bookshelf in the back hallway. It also comes with screws to mount it on a wall if you choose to go that route as well.
I think these are essential in any home, would be needed in the baby’s room, all the bedrooms, and at least one on every floor of the house. You can also get these as gift ideas for new families, or loved ones moving out on their own, or kids going off to College as well.
Do you have CO detectors in your home? How many do you have? Do you check them regularly? What do you think about this one that can last 10 years? Let me know your thoughts below. ~Tom

Looks like a great item to have! We used to have a CO detector, we should probably get a new one.

Hi Wendy,
They are essential. You never know. I have responded to many Carbon Monoxide Poisoning calls in my former 23 year career as a Medic. Thanks for your comment!

It’s great that the carbon monoxide alarms and smoke detectors have 10 year batteries. One less thing to worry about.

It’s such a small investment for the potential benefit we all stand to gain from installing them. I know I’ve put it off for years. This one sounds really good, and I especially like that it has ten year batteries.

My Carbon Monoxide Detector played out a couple of years ago. However, I love the fact that this one meets UL2034 standards and backed by 10 year limited warranty.

I do not have a carbon monoxide detector. I am ashamed to say so. I have a large family of children who needs to be safe from this poisonous gas.

I love the idea of not replacing a battery for 1o years! I don’t have a carbon monoxide detector in my home but I really should to keep my family safe. Is it also a smoke detector?

Hi,
Not sure if that’s your first name or last, or ? So with that said, It is not a smoke detector. They are different. ~Tom Shewbridge
