Learning how to make sketches is very simple if approached systematically. If you are a beginner then you should be ready for a vigorous learning process that will expose you to various sketching techniques depending on the kind of sketch you want. In most cases, the type of sketching technique to apply will depend on what you are sketching. For example the techniques you will apply when sketching a house will be different from those applied when making a sketch of a human face.
Professional artists have proclaimed that drawing people is one of the most difficult drawing assignments. On the contrary, this can be made simpler if the right drawing techniques are applied. Here you are going to learn how to draw people, and the following are the steps to follow:
- Start by drawing the shape of face you want. In most cases, the face takes a circular or oval shape.
- Draw a vertical and horizontal line passing through the center of face you have drawn.
- Draw a jawline below the circle across the vertical line you drew earlier; the distance between the jawline and the circle should be equal to the radius of the circle.

- Draw a jawline below the circle across the vertical line you drew earlier; the distance between the jawline and the circle should be equal to the radius of the circle.
- Connect the end points of the jawline with the circle to form a jaw-like shape.
- To make the eyes draw small circles at each side of the vertical line (left and right) along the horizontal line
- Make the eyes more attractive by giving them shape and decorations. If it is a female face, you can add long and curvy eyelashes
- To add the nostrils, position them at the center of the eyes and chin
- To add a lip, draw a small lip line at the center of nostril and chin. Add a small curve below the lip line so as to give the impression of the lower lip. You can shade the upper lip to make it more visible; if it is a female face
Make eyebrows; add the ears, and the hair. The shape and colors will depend on whether the face is for a kid, adult, male, or female folk. - Give your sketch the final touch by erasing the unwanted lines and darken appropriate areas to make it more attractive
But before you start making any sketch, it is very important to get prepared. The following are some of the preparation steps

- If you are making a sketch of something you are seeing, position it or yourself where you can see it well
Start by making soft, light lines which you can easily erase in case you make a mistake - Keep looking at the item you are sketching and compare with what your sketch on paper.
- If you are contented with what you have sketched, apply finishing touches by erasing the unnecessary lines, shading and darkening appropriate parts
- You can make your sketch to look better by adding some background and theme to it.
