When you think of safety, what comes to mind first? For me, personal safety pops in my mind first, then I think of all the other things and people I want to keep protected in my life. My husband was a victim of ID theft twice and the paper work for that was grueling! A checking account had been opened in his name and checks were written half way across the country in his name AND SSN! It was the most violating feeling he had ever had and for it to happen all over again about 2 years later was just sickening! That was 10 years ago and a lot has changed! We are more vulnerable and have a lot more to loose with our info being carried around everywhere with us!
Here are some safety tips to consider for all that you wish to protect!
- Do not write your child’s full name on clothing or backpacks they carry around
- Change passwords on accounts that hold any credit cards/personal information on you (a minimum) every 3 months.
- Keep all personal info locked up at home
- Watch your bank statements every month. Glance for odd charges-this is how we uncovered our ID theft! The sooner you catch it, the sooner your cards are turned off!
- Go through your junk drawers frequently. Don’t leave old mail or paperwork with account number piling up everywhere in your home
- Buy a safe to lock up valuables and a shredder to get rid of account information (we always used our wood stove before we moved-now we own a shredder)
