Why You Should do a New Years Affirmation instead of Resolution
The New Year is here, so I guess that means it’s time to set those resolutions. Isn’t that kind of a rule? New Year’s = Resolutions. It’s always been this way, as far as I can remember. I’m ready to throw caution to the wind though, how about you? I’m ready to say NO MORE RESOLUTIONS. Resolutions just don’t seem to do it. Too many times have resolutions been set, then followed for a short time and then forgotten. Maybe the expectations are unrealistic, maybe it’s because they are done half-heartedly. I don’t know what it is, but this year I have made a plan to set an affirmation for myself instead of a resolution. You should consider doing the same.
If you think this is all crazy talk, I get it. New Year’s resolutions are a tradition for many and it’s hard to imagine not setting them, but if your curiosity is at least a little peaked, here are some reasons why you should do a New Year’s Affirmation instead of a resolution:
- Most resolutions fail. Did you know that more than 75% of New Year’s resolutions end up in failure? That’s right, 3 out of every 4 people who set resolutions for themselves do not follow through.
- Affirmations focus on a change you want to make, rather than setting a concrete goal. For example, if you want to lose weight, you can make a general “I will lose weight” resolution, or you can set an affirmation to eat healthier in the new year. These types of affirmations are easier follow through on because they create change in your life instead of hoping to see the end result of something in your life changing.
- Setting resolutions give you a goal to work toward in the future, whereas affirmations are set in the present. Example “I choose to start saving $10 per week” instead of “I want to save $500 by the end of the year.” See the difference?
- Affirmations are like mottos. You say them often and you say them proudly. Doing this will start to train your mind to think just like your affirmations say to think. When you do something often enough it becomes a habit, right?
So what do you think? Are you ready to set your New Year’s Affirmations instead of resolutions this year? I genuinely think that making this change can affect how our year goes and how successful we can be. I look forward to hearing about all of your successes!

i stopped setting resolutions a few years ago, it was silly and stressful. Now I just use the new year as a time to reflect on my mindset.

I don’t do resolutions as I don’t do well on them but I will do power thoughts as I will think positively on doing something like eating healthy or losing weight. But I love affirmations vs resolutions.

Resolutions are made to be broken. My goal or affirmation for 2018 is to save $25 a week.

I think you are right. With so many resolutions failing, an affirmation can give a person a more obtainable goal and look at the here and now. Great idea.

This makes more sense than a resolution. I mean if you make a resolution, and you fail, it is pretty cut and dry.Resolutions are all or nothing. Your way, you can have a bad or an off day and put it behind you and move on. Ilikeit.
My affirmation? I will use spell check or be a better typist.

Yes!! I absolutely agree!! Plus affirmations are just better for the soul!! Why can’t we do all think positive to us instead of feeling the need to change things every year?
Jessi Housel says
I get it. For me I plan to simplify by organizing and decluttering which goes along with my semi annual Fiscal fast (Every January and one other month in the year I cut my spending way way back buying only the ness. or must have deals that will save me $ in the long run). This helps me focus on the important things in like

I have never made New Years resolutions! I know that most people mean well when they make them, but I don’t really know a single person that has actually followed through. This year, however, I have decided to make one, and it is not one that I will break. I plan on staying in better touch with family and friends. 🙂

I’m totally going to do this.

This has been a very interesting article. I myself, as well as many family and friends have all started out on these journeys every January 1st. Most often they fell horrible short. While everyone had “good-intentions,” intentions only get one so far and then the pressures of everyday living (not to mention the undue pressure the resolution itself puts on you) lead to feelings of despair and discouragement and ultimately-failure.
This is why I think the “affirmation” mindset is so much better. You aren’t setting lofty (unattainable) goals. You are taking small steps towards a goal and setting yourself up for success by successfully accomplishing things in the short term which will then lead to the accomplishment of your larger goals in an unspecified timeframe.
I think with the implementation of this mindset, we will be able to look back on 2018 as a year of achievement and not another year of disappointment.
Those are my thoughts on the matter…

Chris, I totally agree. What you said definitely rings true, and people really need to consider what they do and say.
Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you more often! ~Tom
