To be a nurse you have to give up part of yourself to other people every day you work. Nurses Week is not enough to recognize what all of these people do for other people.
I was an EMT and Paramedic for 24 years. At one time in my life, I thought about continuing on and becoming a nurse. This never happened and I had a wonderful career saving and helping people in my own way.
Being a nurse is not easy. You have to deal with crazy hours and shifts. Working on the Holidays. Helping people who can’t help themselves. Occasionally having patients yelling at you. Doctors not taking you seriously. The list is long. But they do it anyway.
My mom inspired me all my life. She never finished school. But I remember when I was a freshman in high school she wanted to get her GED. I remember helping her with the math and science parts every day she studied. When she took the test, she got the 3rd highest score in the State of Ohio that year.
She didn’t want to stop there. The City of Cleveland was offering a free practical nurse training program for people with low income. (we were somewhat poor). She went to all her classes, all while working for the Cleveland Public Schools cleaning 4 different schools. I used to go with her to help her so she didn’t have so much to do.
She got her Practical Nursing certification. Went to work as a nurse for almost another 12 years. She inspired me in so many ways. She never gave up wanting to better herself. I so miss her.
My sister-in-law Lisa is also a Nurse. She is always wanting to better herself, she is always wanting to do the best for others.
Right now she is in training to become a Nurse Practitioner while she is working full time as well. This girl doesn’t know the word “quit” and is always trying to excel in all that she does. I am so proud of her. I used to be the goto person for medical questions but since I semi-retired a couple of years ago, she gets all the questions.
I personally want to thank all the nurses out there that do what they do every day. In the 24 years of being a Paramedic, I have had the pleasure and honor of meeting wonderful nurses from several hospitals here in Northeast Ohio.
Without their self-sacrifice, dedication, and heart we would not have people that help us get through those times when we really need someone to tell us we are okay.
