*Product Review* – Official “The Walking Dead” Survival Kit

Survival, being ready for an emergency, even the “Zombie Apocalypse”, are you prepared?  I was excited at the opportunity to be able to do this review.  I was given a product for the sole purpose to conduct the review.

First My Family, an emergency preparedness company, has been able to officially license a survival kit, based on the hit TV show “The Walking Dead”.  This kit is definitely geared towards those die hard fans, but as you will see from the review, it really is an effective kit that can benefit anyone in an emergency situation.  Trying to give an impartial review is my goal here as I do consider myself a super fan of the show.

Okay, so lets break it down.

The bag itself:

The bag is made by a company called Rapid Dominance it is screen printed with the AMC logo, and “The Walking Dead” logo as well.  If you like the bag itself, you can check out how to grab yours here. It is a very nicely made bag, very durable feeling, double stitching throughout, multiple pockets, great zipper quality, and adjustable carry strap.

What’s Inside the Bag?

So you get a wide range of survival and necessity items to survive a minimum of 3 days for 2 people.  With rationing you could probably make it last a little longer, so what is officially in the kit?  Here is a list:

• High end military style messenger bag with brass fittings and custom The Walking Dead Logo
• 2 – Datrex 2400 Calorie Emergency Food Ration. Stays fresh for up to 5 years
• 12 – Datrex 4.22 oz packs of Emergency Water. Stays fresh for up to 5 years
• 1 – Premium Lifeline First Aid kit, 85 Pieces
• 1 – Lifegear Glow LED Flashlight. Lasts up to 400 hours
• 2 – Emergency Mylar Space Blankets
• 2 – Emergency Ponchos for Severe Weather
• 1 – Leather Palm Work Gloves for moving debris
• 1 – Waterproof match booklet (where permitted)
• 4 – Procedural Face Masks
• 2 – SnapLight Safety Light Sticks

To break down some of the items in the kit.

• The Lifegear Glow Flashlight, not only has the white light beam, it the body of the flashlight can go Solid Red for additional visibility, or can have a strobe affect so you can use it to maybe help others locate you.  Also you can screw off the bottom of the flashlight and store items in the body of it, maybe like the water proof matches, a needle and thread, etc..  Check out the Youtube video below on how it works.
  
• The Emergency Food Rations, which are made from all natural ingredients, and the individual water packets are designed to last up to 5 years or maybe longer with proper storage.
• The Premium First Aid Kit is very sturdy, a very hard and durable casing that could stand up to some serious dropping or use.

Functionality:

So the question is, how well would it hold up? or will it fulfill its purpose?  I think the fact that you get enough water pouches, and calorie bars, plus the other essentials in the bag, that it would definitely meet the requirements for anyone, wanting an Emergency Bag/Kit.  It does have some weight to it, mostly because of that water and food products, but that aside, and being able to harness this over your shoulders, I am sure with adrenaline kicking in, carrying it would be no problem.

With the external pockets, and the external flap pocket, plus with room still in the middle, you can customize this bag to make it as complete as you want, maybe you have a small hand axe, or additional gloves, or other safety products like a water filter straw.

Price:

At first I really thought the price tag on this was a little high, it is $129.99 for the bag with all the contents.  As I started trying to put this together myself, and pricing the items individually I found that I was really getting close to that price range.  So not only are you getting a quality bag with quality items in it, you are getting the knowledge that this is an officially licensed “The Walking Dead” product.  Again, perfect for those who want a quality emergency bag, or those who just want it because its tied into the show!

Overall Impression:

I really like this bag, from a huge fan’s point of view, a must have.  From a Paramedic who likes to be prepared, I like this bag.

Pros:  Extremely Durable Bag, Water and Food Rations that last 5 years, First Aid Kit, the other products in the bag, and the multi-functional flashlight.
Cons: The plastic in the flashlight seems fragile almost, that it might not handle a lot of abuse, but I still love it’s features.  I would have loved to have seen a tool of some sort in the bag, maybe a wire saw to cut small trees, or a combo fold-able shovel/axe to help in case you needed firewood.  These are just small things I can think of, and do not deter for my love of the bag!

Do I recommend buying it?  Yes, for two reasons.  If you are a die-hard “The Walking Dead” Fan you must own this!  If you want a sturdy, efficient, and well designed and stocked bag, then you must own this.  So how do you get one, you can visit Amazon here.  It would also make an excellent gift.
