I always like to feel like I am ready for almost anything when it comes to events that might end up out of our control. With this Disaster Preparedness Kit from First My Family, you can have a little piece of mind knowing you will have some essentials in case of an emergency.
I sometimes think I would be ready for a multiple day emergency, and then I look at what I own, and think again. So do you have to spend a lot of money to get started? No, and with this kit, it will help 4 people survive for 3 days. So what do you get inside that makes it a great starter kit? Check out the contents below.
- 4 – Datrex 2400 Calorie Emergency Food. 3 day supply, stays fresh and certified to lasts for 5 years
- 48 – Dattrex Emergency Water Packets (4.22 oz). 3 day emergency supply, stays fresh and certified to last for 5 years

This particular kit also came with a LifeStraw Go Emergency Water Filter Bottle as part of this package. Have the ability of filling it with unfiltered water from a stream, and know it will help reduce some of the impurities in the water, to make it safer to drink.
There is plenty of room left in the packs to add your own supplies as well. Great for beef jerky, or especially if you dehydrate your own meats and fruits, you can have long-lasting food sources to add as well. There is also room for added First Aid supplies, or Lifestraw GO Water bottles so everyone doesn’t have to share.
The backpacks are durable, and with the ability to just grab and go, are a great way to go for those wanting a bit of security, without all the extra cost. The prepackaged food and water are stable in the right conditions up to five years. Couple of suggestions might be to find a nice large water-resistant storage container with handles that could keep the bags out of the sun.
While I was provided with this for review, I can assure you, that as a Paramedic, I would not recommend anything I wouldn’t use myself, and I can truly say that this will be part of our home emergency kit for years to come. This would also make an excellent gift idea for Father’s Day coming up!
Be sure to check out First My Family here on the web, and on Facebook and Twitter as well. Do you have emergency supplies for when you have an emergency? What do you have? Share your thoughts below, and let me know! ~Tom

I love that it has so many items that you need (especially the water filter!), but I do wish it was more affordable. I understand why it’s not, but for those of us on a tight budget, it makes more sense to create our own packs and by the items as we can afford them.

The stores didn’t have enough food, flashlights, first aid supplies, etc. So I think this is a wonderful idea. You never know what is going to happen.

Lisa Stonesifer says
I was wondering, I’ve watched a few survival shows such as “Naked & Afraid” & always wondered if one of those Life Straws or something similar would give someone a better chance of surviving sicknesses from water they came upon, knowing that there may not be any more water such as if it were nightfall& someone needed to stay put to make a shelter. Drinking any water would be dangerous to your health but since water is extremely essential to survival it would be a lot off your mind if you didn’t need to worry about it This kit seems to have a lot of great items in it for common emergencies.
Angela Asbell says
Thank you, much needed information.
Rosanne Clark says
awesome review – something everyone should have – love it

I’d love to have packs like those, just don’t have any money and I wouldn’t be able to talk my dad into getting some. Its odd that some people could think of things like this as a waste of money cuz you might never use em. Bet it was fun getting the supplies and packing em all up, it reminds me of going back to school shopping kind of, lol.

I’m thinking about, holiday family packs, for gift giving…either emergency in car, or home..? Unsure.?
Thank,

It is always a great idea to have a emergency kit in the car and in the home, especially for a family disaster when you live in areas that are known to have tornados, hurricanes, and other disasters that can happen. I was just talking the other day with a friend and we were discussing this exact thing. We were going over (off the top of our heads) the things we thought would be best to have in an emergency kit. Marnie G (Derrick Todd) says
This is great. I think it is important to have a kit in every home — regardless of geographic location — you just never know what could happen. I also think it is important to have a similar but smaller kit in your car.
Deborah Caudill says
Thanks for another great review. The emergency kits seem to have most everything you would need to survive for 3 – 5 days, depending on family size. I do like the emergency survival kits that are packed into a backpack in case the emergency requires you to be mobile and then you don’t need to waste time packing everything before you can leave your house. I also like that the food and water will last for 5 years, and that they have such a thorough first aid kit. The fact that you are or were a licensed paramedic makes me feel even better about the first aid supplies.
Tom Shewbridge says
Hi Deborah, thanks for the wonderful comment. Appreciate it so much. Have a great day! ~Tom
Debra Warila says
This is a very helpful review, Tom! Living in California, I’ve long practiced disaster preparedness for earthquakes and wildfires. Your review reminded me that I’ve run low on supplies, and these kits sound fantastic. I shall definitely look into buying one.
Tom Shewbridge says
Thank you Debra, I do appreciate your comments. Have a great day! ~Tom
Sandy Cain says
Yes, yes, and yes. Super review. And OMG, it’s so necessary! I live in NYC and cannot get 9/11 out of my mind. Call me paranoid (or maybe realistic), but it’s only a matter of time before we get hit again. I agree with you about the axe. And I’d toss in all our prescription meds (and more OTC ones), being sure to rotate the stock as some do with food storage. And Mark made an interesting point about the color – do you want to be rescued, or travel unnoticed? Interesting question. Might be good to have one in red/orange, and one in camo. (and being in NYC, besides the axe you mentioned, I’d be sure to have some personal protection gear. Sad, but true.) Toss in some diapers for the little ones, and ladies, let’s not forget some monthly supplies. Both pads & tampons have other uses in an emergency. Whew, ok, off my soapbox. Thanks, Tom!
Tom Shewbridge says
Those are all great items to have in there Sandy, no problems, Love your comment! Keep them up! and do share with others, thanks. ~Tom
Linda Bradshaw says
This would be so awesome to have! I actually have nothing at all prepared for an emergency or disaster. Thank you for sharing.

I believe that you did a great job with the review. I also think that toiletries should be included, but I didn’t see a survival book. Was there one? I mean like how to start fires, what plants to watch out for, maybe radio with batteries or something of the sort.
Tom Shewbridge says
There was a short book on basic first aid. But you are right, something like that would be awesome. But those are things you can add later…lots of room! ~Tom

Thank you for your review. More often than not, people have the “it won’t happen to me” saying. You really just never know!! This kit has it all. I would probably add sunscreen and bug wipes. Living in South Ga, the bugs and sun can be one of your worse enemies.
Tom Shewbridge says
Those would be great additions Anne, and it has plenty of room for more! 🙂
Natalie says

Laura Griggs says
I love the contents of these bags. As a family we already have bug out bags but are still putting together all the gear we feel we would need in an emergency situation. I would recommend extra medicine for those who take medications regularly to add to the bags too. We have a great little Gerber axe with a knife in the handle, foldable shovel, machete style knives, first aid kit, toilet paper, travel size body wash, shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste and the like so far. We still need to add MREs or some kind of food and water purifying kits. We are also adding at least two changes of clothes for each person.
Tom Shewbridge says
Those are all great ideas. I have some future articles coming up with some different checklists. Thanks, Laura. ~Tom
Sally says
Thanks for doing a review on this, I think my family could definitely use it! I guess I never thought about it until I saw your post!

Lisa Ehrman says
Very good review. We all need a disaster or survival kit. Thanks for reminding us.
Sue E says
The Boy Scouts had it right “BE PREPARED!” When the kids were at home, we thought about safety a lot more than we do now. Boy, was that a mistake!! We almost found out the hard way! There was an electrical surge that shot through ComEd’s old grid. A part of our village was hit. We were on that old grid and we got hit. Thank God, we still had surge protectors on most of the outlets. Those saved a lot of our appliances, etc. Unfortunately, we had some plastic ones that melted and caught on fire! The smell & smoke were AWFUL!!! Another thanks to the Good Lord, because the fire department was already in the neighborhood going door to door – safety checks!! They saved the day!!
Believe me, we went out that day and on got some things that the fire department suggested we get. The main one was getting a new fire extinguisher!! Also all new metal surge protectors!! I spread the news so that others won’t get caught off guard like we did. The sad thing is we knew better! We had it in our head that since nothing has happened all these years that nothing will! WRONG AGAIN!! Things can be replaced, but lives can’t – PROTECT THE ONLY LIFE GOD GAVE YOU & YOUR FAMILY’S!!!
Susan Emery says
I am sorry!! I forgot to use my name & not initials – sorry! The comment from Sue E is me!

I think the First My Family Disaster Emergency Kit is an awesome product. I really need to to do some kits. Thanks for the review.
Angelica S. says
I absolutely love that this kit comes with a LifeStraw. Never seen that in a pre-made disaster kit before. We’re prepared to shelter in place for a good six months but don’t have much in the means of portable/ on the go preparedness. This would be great to leave by the door for just in cases.
Tom Shewbridge says
Yes it would, and it has plenty of room to add more supplies, like beef jerky, boxed milk, powdered food, etc…
Judy maharrey says
I live in Alabama, and our diasisters are usually tornados. You sometimes don’t have time to find what you need to help you survive. This would be a perfect solution for my family. Even after the damage is done, sometimes you don’t have power or food for days. This way at least I would know, that is not something I need to worry about with this kit. People think it won’t happen to them, but there are many types of disasters, and you don’t know when you will be affected by it. Don’t wait!
Edward says
This is a really good review for the disaster preparedness kit. I have a few added items that would also be a great addition to the kit, but this kit is well stocked.
Barrie says
We are so NOT prepared if there was an emergency! Where would you keep these backpacks? In your car or at home to grab when needed?

Awesome that you are prepared. It is good to have something in the house too, like if you had to bunker down in the basement. Have a great day! ~Tom
Cara (@StylishGeek) says
when the Japan quake hit a few years ago, my husband decided we should get those emergency preparedness kits. We got two sets…one of the upstairs and downstairs. It’s a really good idea. Each household should have it!

Cara, I agree. Every family/household should have an emergency plan. I plan to write more articles on this in the weeks to come.

This would be great for our family, since we live in an area that gets regularly hit by hurricanes. This is the perfect size for me, my husband, our grown daughter and young grand daughter. I really need to also start thinking about re-stocking our pet emergency packs. We have 2 dogs and two turtles that will go with us if we have to bug out.

Great kit! I love the bright red…especially if in an emergency I’d get noticed. I love the water bottle too. Great addition.

Tom,
Great review. Seems like a good kit to start out with. I like that there is room to add additional gear. Other prepacked kits don’t usually leave that option for the user. Even if the user didn’t add anything, this kit would tip the survival scale in their favor. My only problem is the color of the bag. There may be situations where you don’t want a bright red bag on your back drawing unwanted attention. But that’s just me.
Tom Shewbridge says
Hi Mark,
I agree with you completely, but you can look at it from two sides. First, maybe you don’t want people to know you have supplies in fear of getting them taken. But Secondly, you might want the bright color in case you need to get noticed to be rescued.
I was going to maybe mention that in my review, but since I was torn on the advantages vs. disadvantages of that thought, I just left it out. Thanks so much for your through comment, I do appreciate it. ~Tom
Susan Bewley says
Wow, this is a high quality emergency kit! I really need to get something like this for my trunk. We are constantly on the go and I’ve been worried what would happen when we are out in the middle of nowhere (especially if we run out of gas in the winter!)
Tom Shewbridge says
Its a great kit, can be used for that, or if there was a natural disaster you would have supplies as well. Thanks so much for the comment Susan, have a great day! ~Tom
Pauline M says
I have one for myself and each member of my family. We live in earthquake country so these stay by each bedside. They are compact and ready to go which I will say is the best part. Very much worth the investment – even the 4 person for each family member. It’s alway good to have a little extra to help others out in an emergency as well.
Tom Shewbridge says
Good Point Pauline, extra never hurts, especially with the water packets, and the food rations. Thanks for your comment, have a great day! ~Tom

I love the backpack part! So much easier than carrying a jump kit! Leaves your hands free. Great review Tom!

Thanks so much! It is much easier! You are right! Thanks so much for your comment, have a great day! ~Tom
Menucha says
This looks like it’s perfect for a little family like ours! We were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and live right near the water – it’s a great kit for flash floods and winter storms.
Tom Shewbridge says
You are right Menucha! It is great for situations like that, and with room to add additional supplies it is a great starter set! Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day! ~Tom

This is such a great kit. There are lots of EMTs in my area that could benefit from this.
Tom Shewbridge says
It’s really for families as well Jenn, for emergencies when there is a disaster. Thanks so much for your comment!
Celebrate Woman says
Most people do not think about disaster or emergency preparedness at all. Regret strikes when disaster strikes, sadly.
This post brings us all to the place of being aware that we have to have the minimal support in the First Aid kit and food and animal prep kit as well.
Thank you for keeping us on the toes and bringing to spotlight things that DO matter, but overseen in the daily life busyness.
